Traditional Holiday Pretzel Crafts
Decorate Your Holidays. The popular pretzel of today was created long ago, in 610 A.D., by a monk at one of the monasteries in the mountains between France and Italy. After baking bread, this imaginative monk took leftover strips of dough and shaped them in the form of a child's arms crossed in prayer. He called his invention "Pretiola," which is Latin for "Little Reward," and gave them to the village children for learning their prayers. The precious Pretiola found its way over the Alps to Austria and Germany, where it became known as "Bretzel" and eventually "Pretzel."
The pretzel has traditionally been a part of many holidays and family celebrations. In Austria, holiday traditions include decorating homes and trees with pretzels. On New Year's Day, in Germany, children wear a pretzel on a string around their necks as a symbol of good health and long life. Join in this holiday tradition by decorating your home with these easy-to-make pretzel crafts from Bachman.
